Getting the background right

The background is where UK applications go wrong more than anywhere else: HM Passport Office asks for a plain cream or light grey backdrop, not white. People assume white is the safe universal answer, submit it, and get the photo bounced. The other half of the same problem is shadow — standing close to a wall throws a shadow behind the head, which reads as a patterned background even when the wall itself is plain. Replacing the background outright removes both failure modes at once.
